Over S$1,700 raised for special needs fund at Orchard Gateway charity roadshow

SINGAPORE — Over S$1,700 was raised for the special needs community from a two-day roadshow at Orchard Gateway held earlier this month.

The money will go towards helping beneficiaries and programmes supported by the TODAY Enable Fund to bolster the aspirations of persons with special needs.

On July 7 and 8, members of the public bought kacang putih (mixed nuts), water bottled by the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore and handicraft, such as tote bags and coasters, made by non-profit organisation, the Very Special Arts Singapore at a roadshow organised in conjunction with the mass cycling event OCBC Cycle.

TODAY and Mediacorp volunteers, including artistes Richie Koh and Michelle Wong, as well as volunteers from agency SG Enable, the TODAY Enable Fund’s administrator, worked the ground to raise public awareness of the fund, as well as to solicit donations.

“It was encouraging to see the volunteers work hard despite the hot weather, and I’m very grateful I had the opportunity to be a part of such a purposeful event,” said Michelle.

Richie added that “a small gesture can be great help” and said he was thankful for the opportunity to “play a small role” in helping to fulfil the aspirations of the TODAY Enable Fund’s beneficiaries.

Among the fund’s beneficiaries who turned up at the charity bazaar to show the public that they did not let their disabilities stop them from pursuing their dreams were blind erhu player Stephanie Ow, blind Chinese calligraphy artist Wesley Seah and blind IT student Chia Hong Sen.

The TODAY Enable Fund will be participating in a second charity roadshow, organised as part of OCBC Cycle, at the Singapore Sports Hub on Nov 17 and 18.
